“Mingling with the Media” w/ Dan Rather

Mingling with the Media” w/ Dan Rather
FREE EVENT!
Wednesday, September 28th from 6:30pm -7:30pm
James & Nancy Gaertner Performing Arts Center, Concert Hall
Arts Center 1751 Ave I
Huntsville, TX, 77340

One of, if not THE most famous SHSU alumnus, Dan Rather, will be on campus this Wednesday to discuss his sixty year career as a journalist. He will also be answering questions from the audience. His return to the SHSU campus is a part of a class project for a course called “Priority One,” which “is a course within the Department of Mass Communication that provides hands-on experience for students planning a career in public relations.”

In this class project, “Mingling with the Media,” the sixteen Priority One students have the task of promoting and publicizing the event. The Priority One students most likely made this very snazzy brochure for the event found HERE. I like everything about it except for the white text on the red background, but the red may look brighter on my computer than it does printed out. The brochure gives an excellent description of Dan Rather’s career, and it is definitely worth reading. Good luck, students!

Huntsville Community Theatre Auditions: "Nunsense"

September 26th and September 27th
Old Town Theatre at 6pm
1023 12th St.
Huntsville, TX 77340

Cheaper By the Dozen still has another weekend of productions, but planning is already underway for the next Community Theatre play. Auditions will be held tonight and tomorrow at the Old Town Theatre. The next play that will be performed is Nunsense and consists of five female characters.

Description (borrowed from HERE, because I have never seen this play):

"The Little Sisters of Hoboken, residents of Mt. St. Helens Convent and teachers at the school, have a problem. It seems Sister Julia (Child of God) has accidentally killed off 52 sisters with a botulism-laced vichyssoise. But even worse, the remaining nuns only had enough cash to bury 48 of the dearly departed; the other four are in the freezer. Nunsense is a benefit concert staged by the Little Sisters to raise money for a proper burial (before the health inspector comes)."

George Russell Book Signing: From My Tuscan Window

George Russell Book Signing: From My Tuscan Window
Wynne Home Arts Center
September 15th from 4:00pm-6:00pm

(Picture taken from the Offical Facebook PAGE for From My Tuscan Window)

George Russell, local business man, founder of the Universal Ethician Church,  mayoral candidate, as well as executive producer and actor (Click HERE to see his IMDB page), will be holding a book signing today for his book, From My Tuscan Window, at the Wynne Home Arts Center.

Description taken from Amazon.com's Product Description:

"In the fall of 1973, George, his wife, Sue, and Italian-born 2 year-old daughter Anne, noticed a bent over sign that read ""Gioviano"" and on a whim decided to see what lay at the end of the road. After 28 hair-pin turns up the side of a mountain on the flanks of the Apuanian Alps overlooking the Serchio Valley some 20 miles north of the city of Lucca, the Russell family arrived at one of the most charming and unspoiled villages left in Italy. That little adventure would change their lives forever and perhaps even the lives and future of the little hilltown itself."

The book is available in paperback and also for the Kindle. I am sure he will be willing to sign your Kindle if that is the version you own. =)

On Friday, Sept. 9, Houston-based Mercury Baroque Ensemble will perform at SHSU in the Performing Arts Center Concert Hall. This is the first in a series of concerts sponsored by the School of Music at SHSU.

This particular program will consist entirely of music by Mozart. We hear that they will be playing two pieces that were composed by Mozart when he was only 16 years old. We have also heard that this group has played in Huntsville before, and that they were excellent.

Reminder: Rita B. Huff Annual Garage Sale

Rita B. Huff Annual Garage Sale
September 2nd, 3rd, and 4th
8:00am - 4:00pm
At the Elks Lodge

The Rita B. Huff Annual Garage Sale is happening NOW and will start up again tomorrow morning. If you don't know where the Elks Lodge is located, then click HERE for a map. It's kind of tricky to find.

I went out there to check out what they have. They have a lot of different item, but just like most garage sales, you have to dig through a lot of junk to find the  "gems."

Here are some pictures that will give you an idea of what they have.

More pictures can be seen on our Facebook page HERE

There are a lot of different items on the inside of the building that will be open to the public tomorrow. They are still getting those items organized. The clothes will be inside along with other various items. It is better to go early rather than late, because the good items will go fast!

Remember, the money raised with this garage sale is for the animal shelter. If you have no interest in any of the items at the garage sale, but would like to make a donation, then click HERE
