All of the firemen and women have been working hard this summer to put out the fires that continue to spark and spread throughout Huntsville and the surrounding areas. This means that they have been spending more money than normal with the same low budget.
The Huntsville Item recently reported on the Pine Prairie Volunteer Fire Department's need for an increased budget from Walker County, which according to the Item and the Pine Prairie Volunteer Fire Department’s Facebook PAGE is $600 per month with no increase in that amount since 1998. Considering how much the cost of living—and especially the cost of gas and fuel—has increased over the years, this budget is clearly not enough. Especially with the record high temperatures (How many days in a row has the temperature been above 100 degrees?) this summer as well as the continuing drought! Without proper funding, the Pine Prairie Volunteer Fire Department will be forced to shut down. In order to prevent that from happening, the Pine Prairie Volunteer Fire Department is requesting that everyone call Walker County at (936) 436-4910. The more calls that Walker County receives the more likely it is that they will receive the requested budget increase.
The Crabbs Prairie Volunteer Fire Department is also seeking help. This Saturday, August 13th, the Crabbs Prairie Volunteer Fire Department is having an Ice Cream Social. Drive out to the station, cool down with a big bowl of ice cream, meet some of the men and women who volunteer their time and risk their lives to put out fires, and leave a donation at the door!
