Walker County Fair Association's 2012 "Country Music Star" Competition

Event: Walker County Fair Association's 2012 "Country Music Star" Competition
Dates: March 10th and March 17th (Auditions), March 31st (Semi-Finals), April 7th (Finals)
Location: Walker County Fairgrounds
Cost: $10.00 entry fee

It is almost time for this year's Walker County Fair Association's 2012 "Country Music Star" competition. Since 2008, Walker County country singers have had the opportunity to be crowned the Walker County "Country Music Star." Auditions begin on March 10th at 10:00am at the Walker County Fairgrounds and continue the next Saturday, March 17th, at the same time and location. The finals will take place on April 7th. This competitions is for Walker County residents only. Residents may sign up as a solo artist or as a duo singing group.

Trade Expo & Taste of Huntsville (Thurs., March 1)

This Thursday from 4p - 8p, head out to Walker County Fairgrounds for the 25th Annual Trade Expo & Taste of Huntsville. About 90 local businesses will have booths for the Trade Expo, and there will be 12 restaurants participating in Taste of Huntsville.

There will be a drawing for $500 at the end of the night, and there will be a cash booth where participants can win cash all evening.
Probably not the style of cash booth that will be at this event...

Tickets for the Trade Expo are free if you get them in advance from an exhibitor or the Chamber of Commerce. At the door, tickets will be $2. Taste of Huntsville will cost $5, which includes samples from each of the restaurants.

Library Grand Opening Ceremony (Sat., Feb. 25)

Huntsville Public Library will open its new doors for a few hours this Saturday (Feb. 25) from 2p - 5p. There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony at 2p, which will take place on the patio at the front entrance (1219 13th St.). After the ribbon cutting, guests will be allowed to view the new library, and there will be guided tours. At 3p, winners of the poster contest will be announced in the Children's Room. Skeeter the Clown will be on hand to entertain and make balloon animals for the kids. Jan Cole will be performing on keyboard during the event. There will also be a scavenger hunt for teens and adults.
The library will open for business on Monday, Feb. 27 at 9a.

Trade Days (Fri.-Sun., March 2-4)

It's almost time for Trade Days at Kate's Gilded Lily (2299 US 190). Local vendors will be selling hand-made goods, antiques, collectibles, gifts, and more. There will also be food vendors. Trade Days goes down on the first weekend of every month, so if you can't make it this time, be sure to check it out next month. We heard there is a new pavilion on the property, but we haven't been able to check it out yet.

Hans York & Jorge Palomarez @ Thoreau Woods (Sat., Feb. 18)

On Sat., Feb. 18, Thoreau Woods Coffeehouse (144 E Mosley Lane) will host Hans York. The show beings at 7p, with Jorge Palomarez opening. Palomarez is a singer/songwriter from Houston. His style is often described as being similar to that of Leonard Cohen. York is a German-born, internationally acclaimed performing songwriter.

Love Day (Sat., Feb. 11)

On Sat., Feb. 11, starting at 10a, The Grainery is holding an event called "Love Day."

From 10a - 4p, there will be a "love swap." This is where you donate items you no longer want or need, maybe take something in return, and everything left over gets donated to the less fortunate. You can bring things like clothing, furniture, books, and household items. There will also be an art and baked goods sale and kissing booth during these hours. This part of the event is free to attend.

From 6p - 8p, there will be a buffet. The cost for the buffet is $20 per person or $35 for couples.

From 7p - 10p, there will be a live music and poetry show. The cost to attend this part of the event is $10 per person. (The Gypsy Davies will be going on at 8. We aren't sure about the times of other performers.)

If you wish to attend the buffet AND the music/poetry show, the cost is reduced to $25 per person or $50 per couple.

Huntsville Latin American Arts Festival

Event: Latin American Arts Festival

The City of Huntsville will be having a week long Latin American Arts Festival starting next week on February 13th. There will be many opportunities to see live performances, sample Latin food, dance, enjoy arts and crafts, and most importantly, learn about the Latin American culture. Most of the events are free and will be located either at the Wynne Home or on the SHSU campus.

9th Annual Strike Out Abuse @ Huntsville Lanes (Sat., Feb. 4)

The 9th Annual "Strike Out Abuse" event will be going down tomorrow at Huntsville Lanes starting around 10a. The first round of bowling will start around noon.

We spotted this ad in Walker County Journal:


Teams consist of 4 people and the entry fee for that team is $120. Each team receives 3 games per person, shoe rental, and a large pizza from Double Dave's. 

All proceeds will benefit SAAFE House. Be sure to practice SAAFE bowling and be careful not bowl anyone over! This is an anti-violence initiative, after all.

2012 Cajun Mardi Gras Festival

Event: 2012 Cajun Mardi Gras Festival
Date: February 16, 2012 at 8:00pm
Location: Estill Building Atrium
Price: FREE for SHSU students, faculty, and staff/ $10.00 for general admission

The 10th Annual Cajun Mardi Gras Festival will be held on February 16th starting at 8:00pm. Special guest performers for this event include "living legend" D.L. Menard along with the Jambalaya Cajun Band. Menard has mostly retired from the music profession, so this will be a rare performance. D.L. Menard, along with Terry Huval and Reggie Matte of the Jambalaya Cajun Band are all world famous Cajun musicians. It is an honor each time these performers visit the SHSU campus.

The "Symposium of Cajun Music and Mardi Gras" will take place before the festival starting at 6:00pm in Evans Building 105. This part of the event is free for everyone. It will be be the perfect opportunity to meet Terry Huval and Reggie Matte and to also learn about the history behind Mardi Gras and Cajun music.

On February 8th, learn about some of the award-winning children's and young-adult fiction published in 2011. Professors Rosemary Chanse and Teri Lesesne will introduce the guests of this event to over fifty award-winning books. Each guest will also receive a free children's book!
